How REAL Soap is Made

Lately I've been getting the question, "Is there such a thing as lye free soap?" The answer? Nope. All soap is made with the chemical reaction between a base and alkali. Now, you might say, "I don't want to wash with anything that has lye in it!" Well, me either. That's why I don't. That's why I would never expect my customers to.
When the soap is cured, the base and alkali turns into a salt leaving no trace of lye (or sodium hydroxide) in the final bar. When someone says "Here is a recipe for lye-free soap..." the recipe calls for already made soap (such as glycerine soap) which has been made using lye.
Confused? Here is a fun, informative illustration about how REAL soap is made:

Let's say you have a great big grassy field. On one side of the field
are lurking a bunch of hungry wolves. The middle of the field is filled
with soft, fluffy bunnies, and of course, the hungry wolves want to eat them.

So the wolves run into the field and start eating bunnies.

But an interesting thing happens. Every time a wolf eats five bunnies -
*Pop!* - he changes into an energetic busy Border Collie and some
peaceful, soothing sheep! So, if there had been 500 bunnies in the field to
begin with, and 100 hungry wolves, all the wolves would eat all the
bunnies and you'd be left with a field full of busy Border Collies and
soothing sheep but no more bunnies or wolves!

This is what happens when you pour the lye solution into the oils - the
lye "consumes" the oils and the resulting transformation produces
saponified oils (soap) and glycerine. This is the process called

And what if there had been only 450 bunnies in the field to begin with?

Well, then the 100 hungry wolves would have eaten all the bunnies and most
of them would be transformed into useful Border Collies and soothing Sheep.
But there would still also be 10 hungry wolves left over with no bunnies
left to eat, and you'd probably get bitten. Not good!

This is why it is so important to make sure you have always calculated
and measured your recipe carefully. You don't want to end up with any
"leftover lye" when you're finished!

On the other hand, maybe you really like having a few soft, fluffy

bunnies around. So you make sure that there are five hundred
AND FIVE bunnies in the field before you let the 100 hungry wolves
in. NOW after all the wolves have eaten their share of bunnies
and been transformed into useful Border Collies and soothing Sheep
you will still have five soft, fluffy bunnies left over and NO hungry wolves.

This is "Superfatting". Superfatting is when you deliberately add more oil to
your recipe than the lye can consume. In addition to saponified oils and
glycerine, a superfatted soap will also contain some oils which have been

left unchanged by the saponification process and still have their original

So having leftover bunnies is a good thing, right? And if 5 leftover
bunnies is a good thing, then 10 leftover bunnies would be even better,
right? Or 15 leftover bunnies? Or more? The more leftover bunnies
the better, right?

Well, maybe, and maybe not. If you have too MANY leftover bunnies,
they'll get in the way of the Border Collies who are trying to do their

job and distract them. Or the bunnies might eat all the grass in the
field and then the field is no good for sheep or anything else. So while
having leftover bunnies is certainly better than having leftover wolves,
you still need to know just how many leftover bunnies you can have
before you start getting too much of a good thing!

Remember this when you decide to superfat a soap recipe. A

superfatted recipe can give you a nice mild soap with the added bonus
of insurance against having any leftover lye. But if you have too much
"leftover oil", then your soap won't be a very useful soap any more!

What it all comes down to is you gotta know your bunnies!

Eat Cake!

My family celebrated my grandma's 76th birthday yesterday and so our crazy family got together for BBQ and cake. First of all, I love baking. I think I could be a pastry chef one day if I ever get tired of soap-making.  I've made all kinds of desserts, but I've never made a two-layer cake until now. I know it doesn't really sound like a big deal, but I've always been a little intimidated with the process. By nature I'm pretty impatient and I like immediate results. Baking, cooling, stacking, carving, crumb coating, cooling some more, frosting and cooling again.. well, that's always sounded like a lot of waiting. I don't like to wait for anything... much less sweets. But, I did it, and it was worth it. My first two-layer "patience" cake.

I downloaded the bunting banner letters from the Ruffled blog. I thought they would be so adorable to use. The cake is decorated with some edible vintage buttons and gold shimmer I've had in my cupcake arsenal. And yes, it does say "happy birthday gramnugget" (that's what I call her). The cake has since been demolished, so I'm glad I was able to snap a few pictures to share it with you. ♥

I'm having an affair with Graphic Design ♥

Don't worry, I'm still in love with making soap, but I get the butterflies when I'm designing new artwork with Creative Suite. I get so excited to learn new techniques, and while I'm not a master at graphic design (yet), I sure do love to pretend. Plus, it doesn't hurt that I get to design graphics and print material for bambuearth without spending a pretty penny. ♥ What do you think of my newest adventure?

Pause, it's Easter.

With Easter rearing it's head, I'm given pause to remember the sacrifice that was made so many years ago for me, for everyone.

This verse is one I've heard many times, yet I've chosen to look at it differently this week. Instead of "the world" and "whoever", I've put in my name to remember that the sacrifice made for the world, was also made just for me.
"For God so loved AMBER that he gave his
one and only Son, that IF AMBER believes in him SHE shall not perish but have eternal life." -John 3:16

It's a bit different when I read this well-known verse with my own name in it (*I'd encourage you to try it too!) And although it is a humbly small show of gratitude for the enormity of what He did, I'm inspired this week to take on a fresh, new servants heart, and redirect my eyes to the cross, as I am reminded that my life is no longer my own, but has been purchased at a great cost.
And just as important as that posture is the one of celebration and worship knowing that we are able to have eternal life with our creator because sin and death no longer separate us! What an awesome truth to dwell on.

New Product Your Face'll go GaGa Over...

A brand new face has emerged. Literally. Bambu Earth presents our Cocoa Buttermilk Facial Mask.

You keep up with the things that need attention in your life. You spring clean your house, you get regular oil changes for your car, and you get your hair trimmed when the ends start to fray... That is, at least, most of the time.

Your face needs upkeep too. You have so much working against your pores. They get clogged with dirt from your hands, pollution from the air and even leftover makeup - and we're just getting started. Give your pores a break from the daily grind with this Cocoa & Clay Mask.

♥ Buttermilk - Softens and nourishes the skin.
♥ Oat flour - Anti irritant, anti inflammatory and moisturizing to the skin.
♥ Kaolin clay - works to pull oils and impurities from your pores and help constrict pore diameter to give your face a smoother, tighter appearance.
♥ Cocoa - in this mask does more than give it a decadent scent, it is rich in antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals and help prevent them from damaging cells.

This is great news for your face! This mask will leave your face feeling smooth and looking more radiant than ever before.

Kitchen Beauty Tip:

Do you have dry, over-processed hair? If you have real molasses on hand, you may be in luck! To make an ultra moisturizing hair mask, just scrub enough molasses to coat your hair while it's dry. Wrap or cover with a shower cap and let sit for 15-20 minutes, then wash your hair as usual. You will end up with the ultimate moisture boost!

Note: Only use real molasses, not any containing high fructose corn syrup or other additives.

Our Valentine

I love Valentine's Day. Not because it's the one day out of the year that we show love to someone, but because it is a "corporate" celebration of love.

Love is in the air... chocolates, flowers, teddy bears. But what really melts my heart, is a handmade valentine. I don't know about you, but I love receiving handmade gifts almost as much as I enjoy making them. Our family exchanged handmade cards in the morning and we helped my sister (she's just four!) make frosted cookies and wrap them for her preschool classmates.

My favorite handmade Valentine, though, was the one I made for my husband. I couldn't wait to share it with you. He loves my hand-blended peppermint tea. He's always over my shoulder while I'm filling orders hoping to get an extra bag for himself. So, I decided to make him his own batch and personalize it to tell him 10 reasons why I love him.

Hope you enjoyed!
